Scientists develop self-cleaning plastic films

Beijing, Dec. 16, according to foreign media reports, recently, the Canadian team of scientists announced that they have developed a self-cleaning plastic film, which can drive away bacteria and prevent the transfer of drug-resistant super bacteria and other forms of bacteria. Scientists at McMaster University in Canada have reportedly developed the plastic using a combination of nanoscale surface engineering and chemical technology. It is transparent and can block all kinds of bacteria after special treatment.

The film is inspired by water-resistant lotus leaves and has microscopic “wrinkles” that block water, blood or bacteria, the report said.

This kind of film can be applied to the surface where bacteria such as MRSA multiply in large quantities, such as door handles, railings, etc.

The researchers also said the new material could be used to package food and prevent the spread of bacteria in raw meat and food, such as E.coli, Salmonella and Listeria. The material is very durable, soft and cheap to manufacture, the researchers said.

“We have developed this material to deal with the threat posed by drug-resistant superbugs,” said one of the researchers, engineering physicist Lela solemani

According to the Centers for Disease Control and prevention, more than 35000 people die each year in the United States due to drug-resistant superbugs.
